Fringe is a subversively adorable salon in the Lower East Side with tin ceilings and tiled floors spawning a romantic nostalgia for creative New York. In 2004 Amy Schiappa created a space, which has been continuously co-inspired by its stylists and clients; artists, designers, and brilliant dreamers, pushing the boundaries of playfulness, community, and signature haircuts. Fringe takes to heart socially conscious initiatives by donating hair clippings to clean up oil spills, supporting girls media projects in Kenya, and exploring product development in Chad.

These statistics are especially relevant in developing countries where child marriage is a common and accepted practice.

A woman in a developing nation faces a one in 76 chance of death from complications relating to pregnancy, compared to one in 8,000 in industrialized nations.

Every 90 seconds, a woman dies of pregnancy related complications, totaling close to half million women each year. These deaths leave approximately 2 million children a year motherless. Without their mothers, these children are 5-8 times more likely to die before they get to their first birthday.

Erum Sheikh
Hairstylist and club promoter, Erum Sheikh, is passionate about the hair industry, music and how they influence the world.
Born and raised in Ottawa, Sheikh has traveled extensively for inspiration. She began her training seven years ago and has apprenticed under Aveda, Vidal Sassoon and Goldwell education artists.
Always involved in giving back she has organized very successful events for nonprofit organizations and participated in various fundraisers. This year she has joined forces with NextAid for International Women's Day.
Carol Ann "C-A" Gleason With an unwavering commitment to social justice, "C-A" credits much of her achievements as an international communication and development specialist to nearly two-decades working within the hair industry, which provided her the opportunity to experience the ins and outs of community spaces, as much as expressing her craft as an extension and dreadlock specialists.
Following years of extensive travel and academic pursuits, she has transferred her experiences to an international scope with an expertise on African and international political dynamics.
Her current work focuses on contemporary frameworks, the variables of globalizations and social mobility, the character of civil society in a digitized world, and the impact digital technologies and new media have in amplifying the voice of ordinary citizens.
